Making public space usable

Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure; Sustainable Cities and Communities
Open for application

Background
The ITS World Congress is the world’s largest and most prominent event focused on smart mobility and the digitisation of transportation. ITS congresses are the yearly celebration of smart mobility: they underline the importance of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and provide an excellent platform that supports the education, thought-leadership, business development, and the overall steady growth of the smart mobility industry. Partially, the challenge will take place on-the-spot at the ITS world congress in Hamburg (free of charge), where participants can get in contact to exhibitors on site. Performing in the challenge will also be possible via internet. It is planned as a hybrid.

Our challenge
Population and production growth have resulted in a demand for higher capacities of urban transportation systems. Today, traffic is the number one occupier of public space in Hamburg. That has led to unsatisfactory conditions regarding traffic flow and traffic jams. Making more public space usable again for the residents therefore calls for innovation and creative approaches. Develop a concept for making more public space usable by interlinking sustainable transportation systems. Bear in mind the urban residents’ wants for cultural and social offers in public spaces.

Expected impact
International cities and metropolitan regions are very interested in innovative sustainable solutions for efficient and climate-neutral mobility. At the same time, many cities and companies are rethinking lifestyles and new design options. The ITS World Congress 2021 offers the opportunity to work on concrete ideas for this together with Hamburg University of Technology.
