Promoting active means of transportation in Hamburg

Sustainable Cities and Communities; Climate Action; Good Health and Well-being
In progress

Background
The ITS World Congress is the world’s largest and most prominent event focused on smart mobility and the digitalisation of transportation. The Congresses are the yearly celebration of smart mobility: they underline the importance of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), particularly in cities and regions where they are hosted, and provide an excellent platform that supports the education, thought-leadership, business development, and the overall steady growth of the smart mobility industrial growth.  The challenge provider will be introduced in the kick-off session and will take part in the final presentation as well.

Our challenge
Bicycles offer an environmentally sustainable and space saving means of individual transportation in cities and are especially well suited for short to medium-length routes. Today, cyclists in the city of Hamburg often find themselves in unsafe situations. Develop a creative concept to quickly expand the network of bike lanes in one district of Hamburg of your choice or find a solution for better bike connections between districts. Use an approach that incorporates the modification of diverse intelligent traffic systems within the city while keeping the safety of cyclists in mind.

Expected impact
International and national cities are highly interested in innovative sustainable solutions for an efficient mobility in their cities. Therefore, the ITS World Congress in 2021 offers the opportunity to work on concrete ideas in partnership with Hamburg University of Technology. Learners will be invited to present their results at ITS World Congress in Hamburg to an international audience of experts from companies and delegates from abroad.
