MODULE DESCRIPTION

CEMP is a project-based introductory course to the circular economy. The goals and the learning outcomes of the course are to provide overview knowledge on circular economy for materials processing through lecturing (first part of the course) and in-depth knowledge and skills by the project work (second part of the course).


LEARNING OUTCOMES

The goals and the learning outcomes of the course are to provide overview knowledge on circular economy for materials processing through lecturing (first part of the course) and in-depth knowledge and skills by the project work (second part of the course).

 After the course the students would be able to understand:

  1. Basic concepts of circular economy, knowledge on materials flow (from mining, processing, manufacturing until end-of-life recycling and re-usage), issues and drivers for a changes.
  2. Recognize impacts (environmental, economic and social) of the current practice of materials processing from a sustainability aspect.
  3. Create new business opportunities to re-enter materials into circular economy.
  4. Apply processing technologies to accelerate the implementation in business creation.

Study mode: In the first part of the course students are suggested to attend to the lessons in the classroom (15 hours). The flipped classrooms method (pedagogical method, which employs asynchronous video lectures and practice problems as homework, and active, group-based problem solving activities in the classroom) will be widely used: videos, Power Point presentations and other useful material will be made available to the students through a digital platform. The main themes of the course will be provided via lecturers or their virtual equivalent. Ideally, there will be a 15 minute video introduction to each of the course themes. Alternatively, there will be the equivalent of a 45 minute lecture in terms of power point slides. The lecturers will be supported by a compendium (reference list) as well as quizzes.

Two types of quiz questions should be provided, one at “overview” level for all the students in the course; and, for students who need to study a given theme in depth due to the theme of their project, a set of more advanced Q&A.

The form of the compendium can be a short introduction with links to e.g. literature, reports and homepages. The purpose of the compendium will be for the students to obtain more in-depth knowledge of the course content.

In the second part of the course the student will be asked to work on a project assignment, individually or in group.

Pre-requirements:

 In order to successful approach the CEMP course, the student shall be very confident from the beginning with the following concepts:

  • Chemistry: periodic table, chemical bonds, orbitals, solutions, acids and bases, free energy (enthalpy & entropy), chemical reactions
  • Physics: phase transition, latent heat, surface tension/energy, viscosity
  • Solid mechanics: stress/ strain, elastic modulus, tension, bending, compression, shear
  • Materials science: crystals, defects, grain boundary, phase transitions/phase diagrams, basic materials sample preparation, basic characterization techniques (OM, SEM, TEM, XRD)
  • Materials technology:
  • Students would take benefit from preliminary knowledge on recycling, life cycle assessment (…) acquired during previous metallurgy courses.
