THE MUSH HAVE COMPANY

A former furniture maker met a brand manager and they started talking about a new magic material they’ve read about. In two weeks “The mush have company” was born, with a mission to bring this innovation to practical use. We use mycelium, the root structure of mushrooms, to grow materials that replace plastics. 


BACKGROUND

About 70 years ago human created plastics, which radically transformed how we live and consume. Today, plastic waste is one of the biggest challenges we face. By using mycelium, as a self-assembling biological binder, together with the waste from agriculture we can grow better materials with great characteristics such as low weight, 100% compostable, fire resistant and isolating. The substrate (agriculture waste + mycelium) grows into the shape you want it, filling out a mold, a process that takes about 4 days. Thereafter the growth is stopped by introducing heat. Any shape or size is possible.

The material is fully biodegradable, toss your packaging in your compost or break it apart and feed it to your plants. It will be gone in 30 days. The material has been used to replace Styrofoam in packaging, to produce furniture, as an insulator in different applications and even as the main material to build a house.

We are on a mission to find new applications of this material and technique. Which problems can we solve that take full advantage of the process and characteristics of this material? Let us know and we’ll pursue them, with or without you :-)?

This project is part of a cross-disciplinary course at Linköping University and gives 8 ECTS. It is a part-time course (25 %), lasts for one semester and includes about 215 hours of work. After completing the course, a diploma will be awarded.

ECIU students applying for this project will also apply to the inGenious course but via a particular admission system (MoveOn). A senior coordinator at Linköping University will contact ECIU students for more information.
